چکیده

Rats with vitamin B6 deficiency excrete cystathionine in the urine (Hope, 1957). Cystathionine is an amino acid in the pathway of synthesis of cysteine from methionine (Fig. 1). A methyl group is removed from methionine to produce homocysteine, which condenses with serine to yield cystathionine. This condensation is catalysed by a transulphurase enzyme requiring pyridoxal phosphate as a co-enzyme. Finally, cystathionine splits to yield cysteine and homoserine. This reaction is catalysed by cystathionase and also requires pyridoxal phosphate (White, Handler, and Smith, 1964). Pyridoxal and its phosphate are forms of vitamin B6, the others being pyridoxamine and its phosphate, and pyridoxine. Rats with vitamin B6

Cystathionase deficiency in fibroblast cultures from a patient with primary cystathioninuria.

Familial cystathioninuria is a rare, hereditary amino-acid disorder with an autosomal, recessive pattern of inheritance (Harris, Penrose, and Thomas, 1959; Frimpter, 1972). There is no consistent clinical picture associated with the condition but rather a mixture of mental, neurological, and somatic disorders and indeed healthy and mentally normal children have also been described (Perry et al,...

HIGH-DOSE ORAL PYRIDOXINE FOR TREATMENT OF PEDIATRIC RECURRENT INTRACTABLE SEIZURES

Intractable epilepsy is a common clinical problem in pediatrics and approximately 13% of children with epilepsy experience intractable seizures. To determine the efficacy of pyridoxine in treating seizures, 30 infants and children with recurrent seizures were enrolled in the present study. All of them were treated with high-dose oral pyridoxine (40 mg/kg/day), as an adjunct to antiepileptic...

Formiminotransferase activity of liver from mice with pyridoxine deficiency.

Recently we have encountered an infant of formiminotransferase deficiency syndrome associated with megaloblastic pyridoxine responsive anemia of congenital origin.1 In 1966 Vitale et al.2 reported that formiminotransferase activity of the liver was markedly decreased in rats with iron deficiency and suggested a possibility of requirement of iron for function and/or formation of formiminotransfe...

Immobilisation hypercalcaemia complicating polyneuropathy in adolescent boys.

Two boys who were immobilised with peripheral neuropathy developed hypercalcaemia. It is suggested that hypercalcaemia aggravated the muscle weakness as well as producing systemic upset. The hypercalcaemia was controlled with corticosteroids which had to be continued over several months. A satisfactory remission of the disease occurred in both cases. The hypercalcaemia was attributed to immobil...
